Urinary Retention Therapy in Utah

Feel Like You Can’t Fully Empty Your Bladder? We Can Help.

Do you sit on the toilet for what feels like forever, only to feel like you still need to go afterward? Are you noticing a weak urine stream, straining to start flow, or going frequently with little relief?

This isn’t just a nuisance—it’s a signal that something deeper may be going on with your pelvic floor or nervous system.

At Reborn Pelvic Health & Wellness, we help men and women in Utah overcome urinary retention with proven pelvic floor physical therapy that gets to the root of the problem—without medication or invasive procedures.

What Is Urinary Retention?

Urinary retention is the inability to fully empty the bladder, whether partial or complete. It can be chronic or sudden and ranges from annoying to dangerous if left untreated.

Common symptoms include:

  • Feeling like you can’t empty completely
  • A weak or slow urine stream
  • Difficulty initiating urination
  • Frequent urination with small output
  • Lower abdominal discomfort or pressure
  • The need to strain or push to urinate
  • Post-void dribbling
  • Needing to urinate again soon after finishing

Causes of Urinary Retention

Retention is often the result of impaired muscle coordination, nerve dysfunction, or pelvic floor tightness that restricts proper bladder emptying.

Underlying causes we treat include:

  • Pelvic floor muscle hypertonicity (too tight to allow full flow)
  • Postpartum trauma or C-section recovery
  • Pelvic surgeries (e.g., hysterectomy, prostate surgery)
  • Nerve injuries or neurological disorders (e.g., MS, spinal issues)
  • Bladder outlet obstruction from muscle tension
  • Prostate-related dysfunction (in men)
  • Functional retention from trauma, anxiety, or habit
  • Side effects of medications or catheter use

Our approach begins with a thorough pelvic floor and neuromuscular evaluation to determine your exact cause—so we can treat the source.

Our Pelvic Floor Approach to Urinary Retention

At Reborn, we specialize in restoring proper bladder emptying using manual therapy, neuromuscular re-education, and targeted pelvic floor rehabilitation.

Your Treatment Plan May Include:

  • Manual internal and external therapy to release hypertonic muscles
  • Pelvic floor down-training for overactive or guarded muscles
  • Biofeedback therapy for better muscle coordination and relaxation
  • Breathwork and core stabilization techniques
  • Bladder retraining to re-establish normal patterns
  • Neuromuscular stimulation (when appropriate)
  • Education on toileting posture, habits, and hydration

Whether you’re postpartum, post-surgical, managing a neurological condition, or simply don’t know why your bladder isn’t working as it should—we create a customized, evidence-based plan to get you real results.

When Should You Get Help?

If you’re experiencing any of the following, it’s time to schedule an evaluation:

  • Urinating more than 8 times per day with low volume
  • Needing to urinate again shortly after finishing
  • Feeling like your bladder never fully empties
  • Weak stream, hesitancy, or straining to void
  • Postpartum or post-operative bladder issues
  • History of catheter use or bladder infections
  • Nighttime urination more than twice per night

Urinary retention is not just part of aging—and it doesn’t go away on its own. Early intervention prevents complications like infections, bladder damage, and quality-of-life decline.

FAQ: Urinary Retention

  1. Is it dangerous to hold urine or not empty fully?
Yes. Chronic retention can lead to UTIs, bladder distension, kidney problems, and pain. Addressing the root cause early is essential.
  2. Will I need a catheter long-term?
In most functional retention cases, no. Our therapy helps restore your ability to void naturally—many of our clients avoid ongoing catheter use.
  3. Is pelvic therapy painful?
Not at all. Your therapist works gently and at your pace. We prioritize comfort and education at every step.

Dr. Betty’s passion for pelvic health and whole person wellness is immeasurable! I’ve gone to traditional physical therapy clinics in years past and found it difficult to keep/schedule appointments with young kids in tow. I have also went blindly to an in network provider only to find that it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Betty offers IN HOME concierge PT services and a FREE 15 min phone consultation to see if she’s a good fit/what to expect/etc. Necessary forms can be filled out online prior to the appointment to maximize evaluation and treatment time. She has lots of tools in her at home tool kit! My kids are older now but I find schedules keep getting busier so without Betty coming to my home, I fear I would still just be trying to run through my nagging running injury. I am back to enjoying pain free miles! Compassion and convenience don’t often go together but with Betty they do!

Betty is PHENOMENAL at what she does. From our first conversation, it was really apparent that she has a huge wealth of knowledge about everything relating to pelvic PT, and she’s super passionate about it! I’ve had just three appointments with her so far, and have already seen huge improvement in my pelvic health–my menstrual cramps have gone from debilitating to nearly gone! And we’re working on lots of other things to help me gain awareness of, take responsibility for, and optimize my pelvic health!
