And before we get started here, I’d love to read your bio for the audience listening to hear all about you and then we’ll dive into all the questions I have for you.

Dr. Jalee John: Sounds great.

Dr. Betty DeLass: Okay. Dr. Jalee John is an OB/GYN um provider at the Tanner Clinic in Layton. She attended Marian University in Indianapolis for her undergraduate and medical degrees. Then she attended Thomas Jefferson University in New Jersey for her OB/GYN residency. She is a diligent dedic she’s diligent dedicated to the patients overall well-being and focused. She believes that OB/GYN is the field that brings joy into women’s lives and brings support during a time of immense vulnerability. It also brings openness and awareness to sensitive health concerns allowing for a p a great personal impact in the lives of the patients. Dr. Dr. John is has a passion for the providing for providing evidence-based medicine and minimally invasive surgical management for quick recovery. She is specifically interested in preventative health, fertility planning, and contraception as well as improving intimacy and relationships. Her training focuses on high-risisk pregnancies and deliveries in addition to the Da Vinci robotic surgeries. Dr. Jalee grew up in western Nebraska and is married to a hospitalist physician who is who is a Layton native. They share one smart, sweet boy and one beautiful, happy girl. J Dr. Jalee’s guilt guilty pleasures are brownies and donuts. Her happy place is either feeling the wind on my face with fresh powder under my skis, being on top of the rock wall, or playing games with family and friends. She also enjoys hiking, reading, and board games. My kind of person.

Dr. Jalee John: I think it like sums me up. I think we’re done with the interview. That’s right there. We’re all good.

Dr. Betty DeLass: So, unfortunately, I have more questions for you because this is just the tip of the iceberg. But, um, tell us like what made you decide to go into OB/GYN? like what was the catalyst of that and the story behind that?

Dr. Jalee John: Um, so I kind of figured out that I wanted to be a doctor back in high school in sophomore year. I tore my ACL. Um, and I got those pictures back from surgery and I just thought it was the coolest experience. And so I like wanted to show everyone these pictures of the inside of my knee and look at this. Um, and apparently other people, you know, kind of thought that was weird or gross and didn’t think it was as as interesting as I did. Um, so that’s when it kind of clicked to me of like, oh, if I think this is really cool, like maybe I should make this career and make this my job. Um, and so then from there, as I uh did undergrad and and look through kind of specialties that I was interested in, I did find that I love the O and I very much love working with my hands and being hands-on. Um, but I also like to know my patients a little bit more, too. So, um, OB/GYN is really the like niche specialty where you get a continuity. You get to know your patients, you get to grow with them, but you also get to do surgery. Um, and so it fit and it’s just been a natural great adventure since then.

Dr. Betty DeLass: That’s an amazing story. I love that. That’s that’s why I became PT too, like the continuity of care and time with patients. So, yeah. Okay. What do you feel like makes you different in the way that you provide care or the care that you like to deliver? And how are you different than any other OB/GYN down the street?

Dr. Jalee John: Yep. Um I mean I would love to say that we that I offer something like really special and unique. Um and while I do think I give great patient care, I do follow all of like the standard guidelines and and hopefully in my view all physicians are practicing like within that same realm. Um so it’s really important to me to practice like evidence-based medicine and making sure that I’m supporting my patients the best way that we at least know how. And I do say we don’t know everything. Um, but I think something really special about my office is like we just have such a great feeling and I’ve had um all my medical assistants kind of like through their whole careers with me and through my time with me. And so we have a like a really good bond and just a really good group. So, I think from when the patients call back to my office and then are roommed and seen and blood draws, um I think overall it’s a like just a really positive experience that people seem to um just drive really well and and it’s not miserable to come to the doctors with my office. I think it’s warm and fuzzy.

Dr. Betty DeLass: Yes. Cool. Talk to us about who would be an ideal fit for you. Obviously, someone who’s pregnant and going to give birth, but like who what else? Who else? Um including those people.

Dr. Jalee John: Yeah. So, I see pretty much all the spectrum of women’s health. Um, even, you know, 60-year-olds with some sort of like vaginal irritation. Um, all the way to 85year-olds with also vaginal irritation. Um, and so really if you’re a female, any age of life, um, any, you know, pelvic related problems in general are helpful. Um, bleeding, intimacy issues, pain, um, vaginitis symptoms, anything like that, we can get you taken care of in addition to pregnancy.

Dr. Betty DeLass: Awesome. Awesome. Okay, talk us through the process to work with you. Like how would someone become a patient with you?

Dr. Jalee John: Yeah. Um, so the best way to actually reach our office, um, I do have some online scheduling because I know myself as a patient, I hate talking on the phone for all of the waiting time and getting appointments set up. So online is definitely something that I want to offer my patients. Um, so that’s available. And then also if you um for some of those specialty appointments um things like new OB visits kind of first visits we do like you to call just so we can make sure that we get a good amount of time for you for us to sit down and and get to know each other. Um and so that is all done through the main Tanner Clinic line and then the extension back to my girls to my office specifically is 7865. Um so if you call that you’ll be able to get directly um into my team and then we’ll get you hooked up and seen in the office.

Dr. Betty DeLass: Amazing. Amazing. Great. Easy process. Okay. What’s something that people don’t know that you think that they should know about either your services, the care you provide, the realm that you work in? What’s a a little nugget there?

Dr. Jalee John: Um, I think there is a lot of variation of normal that people can run into. Um, and but I also think one of the the big things that I’m passionate about um is pelvic health because I think that is a big um issue, especially in Utah, there’s not a whole lot of in education specifically um on kind of what’s like normal and expected um with like pain with intercourse, pelvic floor dysfunction, um hymens there’s uh not a it’s not something that’s always widely talked about. Um, and intercourse isn’t something that should be painful. And so really, um, checking out from our standpoint, is there like endometriosis? Is there something deeper going on? Is it a muscular thing that we get you hooked up with you guys? Um, I think that’s sometimes can be a taboo topic that really doesn’t need to be. And that, um, you know, we’re here to sit down and talk about it and and try to make it better.

Dr. Betty DeLass: Amazing. Amazing. Okay. Is there anything special you want to promote? Any events coming up or anything fun?

Dr. Jalee John: Yeah. Um just kind of in general um I do really like the Safe Harbor Crisis Center is one of the local ones that we have here in Layton um for domestic abuse and sexual assault. So we’ve worked with them a lot and um they do a fantastic job. So they do have a big kind of like annual fundraiser um right around the Thanksgiving time that’s all Christmas themed. Um and you know it’s set up really nicely. It’s a blast. There’s live auctions. Um you get to really hear the stories and be connected with that community. Um, and so that’s a really great way to do that fundraiser and then get involved with that community. So if you want a little fun night out, I would say check out that for sure. Um, and then, uh, just in general, of course, as we’re getting to the flu season, at least now when we’re filming this, I should say look into your flu shot. That’s my big seasonal updates.

Dr. Betty DeLass: Great. Awesome. Thank you. Um, my last question, my favorite question to ask is, what do you want to be known for?

Dr. Jalee John: Yeah. Um I think this is a deep one that you could really go from like, you know, my scrub color or something. Um all the way into like what’s the greater meaning of life? Um so I think I’ll go probably um something that’s been uh that I like to keep in my back of my mind kind of every day as I’m interacting people um is through Mary Kay Ash. She was the founder of like Mary Kay Cosmetics and just her her story and her um focus and drive for the company and um has been something that I’ve learned about my entire life has always been there kind of consistently. But she has a lot of good principles to focus on. Um you know like God first, family second, career third, um the golden rule, treating other people how you want to be treated. And then also the big one from kind of like my daytoday um is there’s a story about how she really just connects with people and even if you’re in a room of hundred people all waiting to talk to you she’s working with the person directly in front of her and making that person feel like they’re the most important person in the world. And so there’s just a little thing that she has of um imagine everyone in front of you has a sign hanging around their neck that says make me feel important. And so it’s something that, you know, I value as a human being. I want to make sure that when people are connecting with me that we’re here together. Um, and so I try to do the same with my patients and just yeah, really remarkable women woman interesting story. So if you’re ever bored, there’s lots of info on her out there.

Dr. Betty DeLass: That’s awesome. Thank you so much for sharing that. Um, and thank you so much for doing this uh spotlight series with us. We we love you in the community. So share us and tell us where where we can find you, how we can get in contact, follow you, uh phone numbers, address, all the things like that.

Dr. Jalee John: Um so I am at the Tanner Clinic um building just off the main um off the main kind of Davis Hospital area off Antelope. Um there’s two new uh big Tanner Clinic buildings and I’m at the OG one. Um and it’s building B which used to be the south building. So, it’s the um smaller one that’s right when you’re turning off Antelope. It’s sitting right there for you. And then, like I said, online or the extension again is 7865 is going to be the best way to get in contact with us. Um and then I’ll see you in my office.

Dr. Betty DeLass: Amazing. Thank you so much, Dr. Jalee, for being on our spotlight series. Thank you for all that you do in the community and thanks for just being a bright light for everyone.

Dr. Jalee John: Okay. Thank you so much. It was a blast.
